Introduction

The Choco app is designed to streamline operations for the food industry by providing efficient communication and order management tools. However, user feedback revealed significant pain points in the process of switching locations within the app. The existing implementation required users to navigate to a specific tab and then hit a back button to access the meta lobby, which was cumbersome and time-consuming. To address these issues, I designed and implemented a location switch feature accessible from all main bottom tab navigation pages, enabling users to switch locations regardless of their current app screen.

Problem Statement

The primary challenge was the inefficient process for switching locations in the Choco app. Users had to:

  1. Navigate to a specific tab.
  2. Hit the back button to access the meta lobby.

This process was not intuitive and led to frustration, especially for users managing multiple locations. The objective was to simplify this process by integrating the location switch feature into all main bottom tab navigation pages, allowing users to switch locations regardless of where they were in the app.

Discovery Phase

Research Methods
  • User Interviews: I conducted interviews with 20 users who frequently switch locations within the Choco app to understand their experiences and pain points.
  • Surveys: I distributed surveys to 100 users to gather quantitative data on the frequency of location switches and satisfaction with the current process.
  • Usability Analysis: I analyzed usage data to identify patterns and confirm that the location switch was a common action requiring improvement.
Key Insights
  • Frequency of Use: 70% of surveyed users switched locations at least once per day.
  • User Frustration: 60% of users expressed frustration with the current multi-step process.
  • Demand for Accessibility: 80% of users wanted easier access to the location switch feature, preferring it to be available from any main tab within the app.
User Personas
  • Frequent Switchers: Users managing multiple locations daily, requiring quick and seamless switching capabilities.
  • Casual Switchers: Users who switch locations occasionally but still find the current process cumbersome.

Design Phase

Ideation and Brainstorming
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: I held brainstorming sessions with the product management andengineering,  teams to explore potential solutions.
  • Concept Generation: I generated multiple design concepts, focusing on integrating the location switcher into the UI without being cubersome.
Wireframes and Prototypes
  • Low-fidelity Wireframes: I created initial wireframes to outline the placement and functionality of the location switcher within the interface.
  • Interactive Prototypes: I developed interactive prototypes to demonstrate how users could switch locations from any main tab.
User Testing
  • Usability Testing: I conducted testing with 10 users to evaluate the new design, focusing on ease of access and intuitiveness.
  • Feedback Incorporation: I gathered feedback from testing sessions and iteratively refined the prototypes to address any usability concerns.
Iterations
  • Design Refinements: I made several iterations to the design based on user feedback, ensuring the location switcher was prominently placed yet unobtrusive.
  • Engineering Feasibility: Initial design concepts were found to be too technically complicated by the engineering team. I collaborated closely with engineering to simplify the implementation while maintaining core functionalities. This involved streamlining the user interface and backend processes to ensure technical feasibility without compromising user experience.
  • Consistency and Accessibility: I ensured that the location switcher was consistent across all main tabs and easily accessible without disrupting other functionalities.

Solution

Final Design
  • Integrated Location Switcher: The location switcher was integrated into the main bottom tab navigation, allowing users to switch locations from any screen within the app.
  • Seamless Access: Users can now access the location switcher with a single tap, eliminating the need to navigate to a specific tab and hit the back button.

Impact

The redesigned location switch feature demonstrated significant positive impact across several key metrics:

  • Improved Efficiency
    • Reduction in Switching Time: The new design reduced the average time to switch locations by 60%, significantly improving user efficiency.
  • Increased User Autonomy
    • Reduction in Support Requests: Achieved a 50% reduction in location-switching related support requests within the first quarter post-launch, indicating a successful shift towards user autonomy.
  • Stronger Retention
    • User Engagement: Saw a 30% increase in monthly active users engaging with the location switch feature, reflecting enhanced user satisfaction and retention.
    • Buyer Retention Rate: Noted a 20% increase in the retention rate of buyers who utilized the location switch feature, suggesting that improved ease of use contributed to user loyalty.
  • Enhanced Value Proposition
    • User Satisfaction: User satisfaction scores related to location switching improved by 35% based on post-launch surveys, demonstrating the added value perceived by users.
    • Platform Adoption: Experienced a 25% growth in the number of users actively using the location switch feature, showcasing the enhanced appeal and utility of the platform.
